Weston airfield under threat

Amy's picture

Hi Everyone Some of you may already know but following the news today I have seen that our DZ is included in plans for development of Eco-homes in Weston on the Green. Bsically they want to build another Bicester on the village and our airfield. Full details can be found here: http://www.the-weston-front.org/ Not sure what we can do but thought you may like to know. Amy and Gaydave xx

Would it be PC to point out that the MOD are keen to sell in light of years of continued complaints by locals about weekend parachuting activity,,,nah,,,guess not,,,the MOD have motives to sell and I wonder what the management can actually do in terms of protest if its the landlord who is keen to offload the airfield - gutted,,,still its a short list not a deffo one,,lets see what happens

I guess they will be the same local residents that don't want 15,000 new homes on their doorsteps.

I wonder which they'd prefer now?

I can understand why the MOD might be inclined to sell, I jumped at hib for years and the farmer who owns the land was under masse of pressure to stop the lease to the airfield...so Swalty et al started to include the village... annual open day, bonfire night paid for by the club with disco really well attended by the locals and he invited the main complanants to the DZ ...who just happened to be ex raf, for a vip day...flight in the dornier etc etc and now the relationship is masses better.

at the end of the day the airfield was there long before the residents...is this the same at Weston? I suspect so.

If the sale of DZ is a serious possibility lets find out... see what we can do? see if we could get some private investment? Co operative like Black nights and cark have?

Just some positives

For anyone who believes that government policy can be influenced by a petition:

It may at least make you feel better.

Thanks dougal, I hadn't had time to find any exsisting petitions. Dave and I had guessed there would be. Name added. Maybe we should create a paper one for the DZ so people can add the their names and we can add hem to the online version. Amyx

IConsidering the current financial climate any plan on this scale, especially for housing is a close call.

There are so many new builds around that have been empty for over a year, folk just cant afford them. The knock on effect is that if they do go ahead and build houses it will be quite hard to encourge shops to sign up as they wont want to be in the middle of a housing estate where no-one lives.

One things for sure, and I speak with some authority, even if all this did go ahead building wouldent start till at least 2012 ... and much can happen in that time.

i dont think there is much chance of this being taken forward. plenty of alternative brownfield sites that would be developed ahead of the dz.
